2010 Obudu Mountain Race date Confirmed
The dates for the 6th Edition of the Obudu Mountain Race and the 2nd Edition of the African Nations Mountain Running Championship have been confirmed.
The two races will hold simultaneously on Saturday, November 27th 2010, at the prestigious Obudu Mountain Resort. Registration for the race will commence on August 30, 2010 to be coordinated by the Local Organizing Committee for the race, headed by Sir William Archibong.
Acclaimed as the highest paying Mountain Race in World, the race has witnessed tremendous growth and improvement since its inception six years ago, culminating in the addition of an African Nations Mountain Running Championship. The first edition of the Championship held last year, with Ethiopia team winning, followed by Uganda National team and Nigeria National team in 3rd position.
The 5th edition of the Obudu Mountain Race was won by Ethiopian Habtamu Fikadu Awash with a time of 42:03 minutes. Gregory Kusuro of Uganda came second with a time of 42:11 minutes while Kenyan Macdonald Ondara took the 3rd position in 42:14 minutes in a highly competitive male race.
The female race was a clean sweep for Ethiopia as Mamitu Daska beat her compatriots Mestawet Tufa and Meselech Melkamu Hileyesus to 2nd and 3rd respectively.
“With the successes recorded so far, we can’t wait for this year’s race to come. It promises to be bigger and better, with a stronger field expected. His Excellency, Governor Imoke has continued to support the race, and we’ve continued to receive tremendous assistance from the AFN, WMRA and IAAF, so we expect more innovations this year” said Archibong, Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC).
The Obudu Mountain Race is a weeklong event, featuring activities like Doping in Sports seminar, Media Race, Children’s Race and a Gala Night/Fireworks aside the main race.
The main race/African Nations Mountain running Championship covers a distance of 11 Kilometres uphill, to an altitude of 1,575 metres above sea level, taking you to one of the finest tourist destinations in the world, the Obudu Mountain Resort.
